I would like to see a company make irons with only the loft listed on the iron instead of the club number. Then if they offered it in 2 degree or even 1 degree loft spacing the consumer could pick and choose their custom sets by loft.
Then when some company wants to do "comparitive testing " of say 7 irons the company could determine what the 7 iron loft standard is at the time and just send them that club for testing.
Since manufacturers have been manipulating lofts the numbers have no meaning. I know how far I hit a 40 degree iron in my set, I don't need a company to mark the iron with a 8, 9 or what's next? a PW just to make me think I hit the ball farther.
I'd have my Irons marked only with
20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44 and 48 to correspond with the degrees, just like wedges and hybrids are now being marked.
