Yep I did it. I bought the cheating club. From now on there is a Callaway Apex UW in my bag. I have it in 21 degrees and basically that is my 225 yard club, like a 3i distance. The thing I like about it is that it has a more wood bias compared to a hybrid. So the lie angle is a bit more flat and that helps me to get away from the hard lefts. so easy to hit that thing with great ball speed and high flight

If you have followed this thread for long, you might recall I have tried pretty much every game improvement iron Mizuno makes, up through the 921 Hot Metal.

I've regressed, going back to the 900 Hot Metal. No offense little running bird, but to me, the 900 feels better than some of the newer irons. Maybe I'm crazy, but then, it wouldn't be the first time I was accused of that.

In my bag is currently the 6-GW, an old 56 degree MP series SW. I have a 54/14 coming that actually has a senior flex graphite shaft. Then there's two 850 woods, the driver and 5 wood. I have a JPX E3 3 wood coming from Japan and it should arrive next week. I'm looking at adding a 5 hybrid, preferably a Fli Hi like I had many years ago.

An aside to all that, for a lot of years now, I've played a Titleist, but recently, I tried the Bridgestone e12 ball and I really like it. If Mizuno made an optic yellow ball, I'd try it, but I just can't see or find a white ball so easily anymore.

All this fits, somehow, in a little Mizuno BR-D3 stand bag.

BTW - The pole with a glove on top is a great stretching device. It's an extendable pole you unscrew and adjust to your height, then follow the stretching sequence in the photo instructions down the side of it. It's a great gadget.

Knowing I like Mizuno equipment, I was offered some JPX850 Forged irons with senior flex at a good price. I bought them and they are supposed to arrive today.

I'll do my usual mods, lengthening them and backweighting them, then use them for a while. I'll be interested to see whether I can still feel much difference between them and my 900 series Hot Metals.

(edit)

It's now Saturday and I've hit them into my net a few times. Because of the Jewish holidays, I won't be able to play until either late next week or early the week before.

Bottom line, they feel very good. It's a slightly different feel from my Hot Metals, not as dramatic as I might have expected. Both feel good.

I just sold the Hot Metal irons. I'm going with the JPX850 Forged. I'm not sure I'm any better with one set over the other, but the feel is just different enough that the enjoyment of the feel made up my mind.

I have a decision to make. I have a set of MP-H5 irons with regular flex graphite shafts. (I've been using senior flex for about 2 years now) I'm going to play with them tomorrow and see how much difference I see in my game, distance wise, feel, whatever crosses my mind. I loved the MP-H5 irons and have a lot of fond memories how well I played with them. I wonder if it would be worth pulling the shafts and putting senior flex in them?

Hi Dennis ... Much as I used to tell my wife that "size isn't important", likewise in golf, "length isn't everything" - Your regular graphite shafts will probably lose you a few yards over senior shafts, but you should get better dispersion with the slightly stiffer flex? - Even in my 60's I have given up searching for length & am happy to concede a few yards for straighter shots, especially with the shorter irons - As to swapping the shafts, if you can do this yourself, what have you to lose?
Good luck ... Paul

That's exactly what happened, (distance loss), but I've got different issues, a recent bad habit of pulling a lot of short irons, so the distance loss, along with the pull, has had be hitting more bunker shots. Now, I'm usually a pretty good bunker player, but it's no way to score effectively.

I hate to say it, but I'm rethinking my previous attempt with one length irons and wondering if my usual physical issues wouldn't be better served that way. The arthritis in my spine leaves it easier to swing around me, more so than a more bent posture swinging more vertically.

Hi Mizuno Forum fans,
It took me a while, but finally made the decision to replace my trusted JPX900 Tour irons (February 2017) by the new JPX 923 Forged. Tested them next to the JPX923 Tour, but decided that the old man needs a little bit of "help". With the 923 Forged, I ordered bronze T22 wedges, which will look great in the bag. I am really curious about the difference in feel (vs 900 Tour) throughout the whole set, as only the #7 test iron gives you a rough idea, but is no reference for the complete set. The order was put in the system yesterday, so I hope for a speedy delivery.
Great support from Marc-Jan, the club fitter at Golfstock in Rijsbergen (The Netherlands), without a doubt the Mizuno specialist in this part of the world.

Here, it seems the 6 iron is the most common test club. I've never felt it was enough. I'd prefer to hit a wedge too, at the least, or if I had my way, a combinatioin like a 4-7-PW.

I'm back to my old JPX900 Hot Metal irons. I tried the JPX919 Forged irons and with the regular flex shafts, they felt OK, not all that much better, but the flex made a very big difference in my distance. They were graciously accepted when returned.

I am about to experiment with a 3 hybrid as a replacement for my 3 wood. All my life, 70 years of playing this game, I have always had a love/hate relationship with fairway woods. I don't expect the 3 hybrid to go as far as a well struck 3 wood, but I do expect to hit the hybrid more consistently, while I seem to top the 3 wood half the time. It'll be a compromise on paper, but I believe the reality will be a big improvement. I'm thinking it might be even better to look for a 2 hybrid that ight cover more of the distance.

At Killian Greens, I usually hit the 3 wood at least 9 times, the usual par 5 second shots, often off the tee of a par 4 and off the tee on one of the par 3 holes. It's too important to cost myself so much topping the 3 wood.

Why not get an adjustable hybrid that covers your options. I have been using the same Bio Cell hybrids for the last 8 years and just swop the settings around for winter golf.

I've been looking at a somewhat older Fli Hi that matches my 4 hybrid. It's not adjustable, but I like the feel of the 4 hybrid. If the concept how I need to use it works out, maybe I'll look for the 2 hybrid, but I'd rather not add a fade bias by lowering the loft on an adjustable 3 or 4 hybrid.

Dennis you will find a number of the adjustable Hybrids have draw settings. e.g:-
  • Bio Cell 2-3 Hybrid: Adjustable from 16-to-19 degrees. Draw settings are available at 16.5, 17.5 and 18.5 degrees. Stock length is 41 inches and the swingweight is D2.
  • Bio Cell 3-4 Hybrid: Adjustable from 19-to-22 degrees. Draw settings are available at 19.5, 20.5 and 21.5 degrees. Stock length is 40.25 inches and swingweight is D2.
  • Bio Cell 4-5 Hybrid: Adjustable from 22-to-25 degrees. Draw settings are available at 22.5, 23.5 and 24.5 degrees. Stock length is 39.5 inches and swingweight is D2.

Further to my search for a hybrid, I bought the Fli Hi, but when it arrived, it was ladies flex, not senior as advertised. 2nd Swing apologized for the error and the club will be going back. There's probably not much difference in actual use, but the club was also shorter, so it needed to be extended 2" and it's pretty uncontrollable.

In the past, my experiences with Cobra products has been good. If I don't find a solution soon, maybe I'll look at some of the old Amp Cell or Bio Cell lines.

[EDIT] The hybrid with the lady's flex shaft went back. I'm still trying to decide whether a 7 wood or a 2 or 3 hybrid would be the better choice.

[2nd EDIT] I found a 2020 CLK 2 hybrid and bought it last night. At 16*, it has plenty of possibilities to replace my 3 wood or raising the loft by a degree or two to fill in a 3 iron gap between my 3 wood and 4 hybrid.

I'd be happiest if it would replace the 3 wood effectively enough. By that, I mean I'd be happy to lose a bit of distance if I could just hit it consistently well.

I got the hybrid and set it at standard loft, upright. I won't get to play until Monday, so we'll see how it goes.

My new LW-C bag is out for delivery today. I'm waiting on the Fedex truck now.

My golf bag set up for 2023 at the moment,

Mizuno STX230 12 Deg Mfusion R flex

Cleveland Launcher XL HALO 18 Deg 3+ Hy-Wood Project-X Forty 5.0 A flex

Callaway EPIC 18 Deg 3 Super-Hybrid Aerotech Steelfiber FC65 senior flex

Callaway EPIC 21Deg 4 Super-Hybrid Aerotech Steelfiber FC75 R flex shaft

Mizuno JPX FLI-HI 19 Deg 4 Hybrid iron Nippon N.S. Pro 950GH NEO R flex steel shaft

Mizuno JPX 921 HM 5-PW shafts Nippon N.S. Pro 950GH NEO R flex steel shaft

Cleveland RTX 50/54/58 Deg Dynamic Gold Spinner Wedge flex Steel shafts

Bettinardi BB-Forty Five Precision Milled Putter

I'm not totally committed to this set up between the Cleveland 18 Deg Hy-wood and the Callaway 18 Deg EPIC Super-Hybrid they are both performing about the same in distance and dispersion not a lot to chose between them but I've only hit them against each other on the Simulator and not on the course and its not easy to judge which one is the better option, going to wait till I've hit them on the course before I pick one over the other.

I might have the same problem between the Callaway EPIC 21 Deg Hybrid and the Mizuno 19 Deg FLI-HI 4 iron replacement as I've yet to hit them against one another..? I'll know better tomorrow night once I hit them on the simulator..!

Not to say that things might not change going forward..!

Cheers John :)

Hi Tony,

I'm finding it ok I've used it without any problems so far, I used it on my Powakaddy electric golf trolley where it sat nicely in an upright position and as it should held securely in place by the top and bottom elastic straps as can be seen in the photo of Greg and myself,
I also found it to be a reasonable roomy bag with two small side zipped pockets and two larger full length side zipped pockets one on each side to hold all that you would need, and three smaller front pockets for golf balls and all the other personal belongings you might need to carry that's a total of eight zipped pockets and one small front pocket with a magnetic top flap , the top of the bag for your clubs has 14 way full length dividers and a separate outside umbrella holder. bcfba96f-3af8-4713-b9f7-a296dc86790c.JPG IMG_5606.JPG

I now use it on my sit on golf buggy as can be seen in the other photo and again it sits in the correct position without any problems,

Hope that helps you Tony.

Cheers John :)
