Can somebody recommend a winter mat, for playing on course.

I've never played in winter, so I've never previously used one.

We get one provided by the club. It's supposed to last a couple of years and then they will replace damaged ones. I don't like them as i tend to hit ball high off them. I will dig mine out tomorrow and take a picture.

I've heard people here talk about going to mats as weather gets colder, but this is the first time I've seen one in pictures. In my mind, i had pictures something like Astroturf, not the little plastic circular fingers sticking up the way they appear. I also never imagined they were that small, but it makes a lot of sense.

I can see in some cases, using the mat would greatly improve your lie, (like the hillside rough shot in the video), but the benefits of protecting the course far outweigh anything like that.

Here in Miami, we don't have a winter by the stretch of anyone's imagination, but this time of year through the end of December, we get a lot of rain and it can leave the course in a condition where mats would be beneficial. I wonder if people would return them if the course gave them out to be used?

Check out "Spurkgolf" we started using them at the club last year... Absolutely brilliant, great contact with the ball and no face fulls of mud with any fat hits.

There a rad expensive at £27.50 ish but have really changed our winter golf and protect the course to boot - win/win 😉

Aye, I've seen them. Might give them a try.

Are you using the short or long pile version?

The short pile... They are great!

The club introduce a "mat only" policy from 1st November, which really saves the course and definitely improves winter golf & ball striking what's not to like. 👍😉

OK, so I actually went with this mat for now.
£12 including delivery from eBay.
It did not include the carabiner.

Tried it for the first time today.
Getting some serious spin from this thing - see the 2nd photo which was a 52 degree wedge, downwind. Old Pro V1x ball. Pitch mark shown with red arrow.

It's excellent to hit from. No idea of durability yet, too early to say.

Measures: 400 x 250 mm. Pile is listed as 27mm.

Do you still use the mat, even from a lie on the fringe like you have in the bottom picture? I'm in Miami, Florida, so obviously we never need mats, but I'm not aware of anywhere in the States where they use them. My brother-in-law in Redding, California regularly plays 12 months a year, but often has to wait at the course for fans and heaters to defrost the greens. but I've never heard him talk about a mat.

Hello Dennis

I wouldn't use it from the fringe - would just putt or chip. The mat is to protect the fairway from full shots.

Mats are common in the UK.

Also "winter greens" - part of the fairway with a hole in it.
