What Kind Of Pets Do You Have?

I've been retired for about 15 years now, but my wife still likes to work. Since I spend a lot of time at home, my 2 dogs have become my greatest entertainment.

Meet Molly and Hogan!

Molly is a Maltipoo we rescued from Texas. She was abandoned on the grass median of a 6 lane highway in Waco, Texas and when she was rehabilitated from what was an apparent beating, we adopted her. She is the most affectionate dog I have ever known and loves every person she's ever met.

Hogan is a 100% pure bred Bichon Frise, typically a $5000 dog around here, who cost me $100 to rescue because he has a birth defect, no tail. (He has a little piece of cartilage like a spoiler fin, so we refer to him as he exclusive sports model) And yes, he is named after Ben Hogan. He is VERY much my dog, loves to go to the golf course with me and has to sleep against me at night. If a dog is man's best friend, Hogan is definitely mine.

BTW - His front leg is shaved where the anesthesia was plugged in when he recently had his teeth cleaned. I always tease my Vet that she should shave the other leg to match.

We had 2 cats at different times. One was a pet our daughter's friend kept in her college dorm room. When she took it home for the Christmas break, her parents wouldn't let her keep it because her Dad had terrible cat hair allergies. She begged our daughter Stephanie to keep it and the kitten seemed to get along really well with out dog of the time, a little Shetland Sheepdog.

We hadn't come up with a name for about 3-4 days when Steph was sitting on the couch with her arm extended, just sort of flexing her hand and stretching her wrist. The kitten grabbed onto her and wrapped itself around her hand. It looked like a little gray fur boxing glove. Stephanie raised up her arm, looked the kitten in the eye and yelled, "YOU'RE EVIL!!!"

My wife looked over at us from the kitchen and said, "I think he just got named..."

Sure enough... When the neighborhood heard, everyone wanted to meet the cat named Evil.

I live 3 houses down from the field behind a big middle school and for many years now, it's been a habit to take my dogs or cats outside and just sit in the yard around 3:45. A lot of kids wait in my yard to be picked up, away from the traffic in front of the school and there's a lot who just walk home. Needless to say, my pets have always enjoyed all the extra attention. Hogan and Molly are definitely the favorites of all time, but Evil definitely had a ton of admirers.

It just crossed my mind, tomorrow, September 22nd, is Hogan's "Gotcha Day", the 13th anniversary of us adopting him. I think I'll take him to the golf course with me tomorrow morning as a treat.

OMG - I can't wait to use the line "Domestic Line Management"...

We've had 3 cats, one in Jamaica and two here in Miami.I enjoy cats as much as dogs, but then, I would probably enjoy having a pet alligator too. One cat was really special. After a tropical storm, I went outside and heard a quiet little meow. There was a gorgeous little black kitten hiding under some storm shutters. We advertised around the neighborhood and nobody claimed it, so we kept him. Unlike most aloof cats, this little guy was so affectionate and was very responsive when he was called. We named him Licorice and used to play a game with him where we would tap his one white toe. He was so much fun.

Now, with my Bichon Frise, I could easily have a cat, because Hogan loves every animal he's ever met. I'm not sure how our Maltipoo Molly would act. She's often aggressive around other animals. I don't know if she thinks she's protecting me or what, but she'll growl at the 130 lb Great Dane around the corner and a 90 lb Doberman is scared of little 9 lb Molly. Hero hides behind Rob's legs when he sees Molly.

The Torah portion for this weekend is about Noah. It's a loose tradition that during services this weekend, we honor animals in general and our pets in particular. Tonight, we will be bringing our pets to synagogue. In the past, we have had dogs, cats, mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, birds of every sort, a monkey and a very unpopular, with the ladies, snake.
