Well without any of the "Big 3" playing this is a pretty strong European Tour field with names like Poulter, Rose, Garcia, Kaymer, Schwartzel, McDowell, Snedecker, Quiros, Clarke, Hanson, Rock headlining.

8 groups of 3 play round robin for two days before the top two players advancing to the last 16 on the weekend.

PS My mate spent a Summer caddying at this course...

Justin Rose just handed Robert Rock a dog license (7&6) - six birdies in 11 holes will do that for you.

Wins for Poults, Sneds, Sergio, and Lawrie in the early matches

I don't know why they dont play more matchplay events.

If they kept the players who had been put out playing by having placement matches ie playing for 5th to 8th as well as 1st to 4th then it wouldn't end up with only 2 matches on the Sunday.

With a field like this one you are likely to have some very good matches for places 5th to 8th and the players would surely want to beat the opponent they were playing enough to give their best.

Good chance for potential Ryder cuppers to show their matchplay ability too and get some match practice.

American Brandt Snedeker beat Thomas Bjorn 5&4 in the Volvo World Matchplay today wearing these horrific trainers and only 10 borrowed clubs after his actual clubs were delayed in transit! His real clubs arrived on the fourth tee and he added four to his borrowed set to make up the 14.

"I didn't like my chances on the first tee," Snedeker said. "I just thought, 'Go out there and see if I could try to beat him, try to do what I could with what I was playing with.

"I used John Senden's back-up driver and it worked really well, so I think it's mine now. The putter I got from the pro shop - they haven't charged me yet!"

Just watched this mornings action and to be quite honest it was pretty appalling.Wind has got up a bit and is making it a little tricky but still some very poor golf played by everyone.Quiros best of the bunch.
