Since it's been a long, LONG time since i could ever play a muscle back iron effectively, my thinking may not be so relevant, but...

I can't help but wonder how much difference there is in the feel and control offered from an older set like the MP-4 than more modern models. Unlike game improvement designs, the muscle back design is pretty much the same as it's been for many years, at least it seems that way to me. Explain if I'm really all that wrong.

A lot of tour pros play muscle back irons. There must have been something about this particular set that got his attention, regardless of their age.

I agree Dennis - Tour Pros, especially the top ball strikers, do favour the muscle back, almost blade, irons - They can work the ball easier with that style of head - The MP4 is a great example & I did have some myself when I had delusions that I could use them effectively! - I'd certainly use them (& the even easier to hit MP5) ahead of Mizuno's latest blade / muscle back irons with the new harder chrome (Chromoly?) - I don't like the feel of the new metal at all, whereas a nicely struck iron shot with the older forged models is just bliss when you hit one out of the sweet spot ...

I have an old set of Haig Ultra irons with regular flex shafts. They were a gift from a friend after I admired them in his garage one day and suggested we restore them and make a decorative wall hanging. They are forged, small blades and I probably hit the center of the face only 1 out of 3 times. That may be exaggerating at that. All the same, when I take them out once a year or so, it's still an incredible feel modern clubs don't duplicate well.

The only irons I ever hit that felt that good were some Epon 700 series played by one of my usual Monday group. If feel was education, I think we have been dumbed down a little over the years.
