I'm looking at an old set of irons, some MX-200, with senior flex graphite shafts. For $300, I'd get the 4 iron through gap wedge. The condition is reasonably good...

They are sort of thing I've wished for, but didn't really know existed, a forged iron with an oversized head.

Anyone know much about these clubs? Was the performance respectable? Were they known for any particular attributes or flaws?

Thanks,
Dennis

The performance was acceptable but I preferred the MX300'S.

Some comparison pics of the 6 irons.

200 on the right and 300 on the left.

As a personal preference I felt the 300's performed better for me. I have the MX200 Demo club to bang balls into a net at home.

Hey LOS, good to see your voice...

That's a reasonable argument for the 300, but it's not a set available in this case. I'm thinking I'll just buy the 200 set for the hell of it and do my usual mods to it. If I like how it turns out, I'll keep it and sell the PXG 0211 irons currently in my bag.

To digress, I had some Hot Metal irons, but I splintered the shaft on the 5 iron. (Hit a ball on a tree root that was hidden underground) I couldn't get the shaft replaced locally, but an opportunity to sell the set came up and I sold them, 6-GW.

I tried a set of 2019 model PXG 0211 irons and they are OK... just OK. They are definitely long, but there's not as much feel as any Mizzie I ever had.

Here's the thing... My eyesight is such, I have a color contrast issue, so I rarely see the ball in the air on any shot over 100 yards. Feel is pretty much all I have left to enjoy until I find my ball and sometimes appreciate the shot I hit after the fact. I want as much feel as possible and who better to expect that from than Mizuno? Right?

I know they are old, so hopefully, when I take them to Planet Golf to check the lofts and lies, they won't been much bending. At 72, I don't bend very easily either, so I guess I know how they would feel.

Hi Dennis, You were lucky to find a set in "reasonably good" condition as all the sets I have seen in the last few years had really battered faces and soles on the 7to PW and were going for half the price you have been quoted.
I know what you mean about seeing the ball in flight and I have used yellow balls for a long time now as they appear black, to me, in flight. I have an appointment in January with an eye specialist to see if I have an ongoing problem and if it will affect my ability to drive.

I bought them. I'll pick them up around Monday or Tuesday, depending on when the guy comes back from a weekend out of town.

I still have my old JPX 825 driver and an old SW to flush out the set. Maybe I'll look for a Mizuno 3 wood, just for the hell of it. Somewhere around this mountainous mess I call home, I also have a pretty nice Mizuno stand bag I never got around to selling.

Something will be interesting with this set of irons. They are an inch longer, 39" five iron. I usually lengthen my clubs 2" and backweight them with 40 grams of lead. My typical 5 iron is 40" long and comes in at a swingweight around C3. I wonder if I can manage this set without the mod? Or, given back issues that come and go, maybe it's worth experimenting to make them even longer. They are standard lies, so the lengthening actually makes them slightly upright, which suits my specs nicely.

As for the eyesight problem, I also use optic yellow balls, but it's not visible in the air unless I have a dark background like trees to see the ball flying. My buddies tease me that I'd enjoy golf more if I consistently hit it in the trees... Anyway, the optic yellow helps me find the ball on the ground much more easily than other colors. I tried orange and red, but I don't see tham any better in the air and I can't find them as easily on the ground. I've never tried the optic light blue color Volvik is experimenting with, but I haven't got any reason to think it would be any different.

I recently loaded a shot tracer app onto my phone and I hope to try it Monday. In theory, it's supposed to be just like the laser trackers on tv, showing my ball flight. I'm going to take a brick to the course with me to lean my phone against and see if I can make it work. If it does, I'll be thrilled at the possibility of playing alone again. It's not that I prefer to play alone, just that I want to play more and don't know enough people who can play during the week.

I even had cataract surgery and my Ophthalmologist, who is an avid golfer, was surprised my left eye didn't help me see the ball better once it was fixed. What I need is a tour caddie. I refer to my usual Monday morning buddies as my seeing eye dogs.

Hi Sandmangolfer...

I had my clubs stolen in Jamaica quite a number of years ago. I put them in a rack, walked in the clubhouse and 10 minutes later, they were gone.

I had expected the guy with the irons to return to Miami today, but he's not home yet. No hurry... In the meantime, there's a nice set of 900 HM irons at 2nd Swing I might talk to them about. I don't know why, but when I had my original set of 900 HM irons, they felt good to me, but my subsequent 919 and 921 HM sets didn't feel as good. I don't know if it was the shafts or just my rapidly declining talent, but it won't take much for me to grab the 900 HM set.

I got the old MX200 irons today. The guy even delivered them down to me in Miami since he took an extra couple days of vacation.

I misunderstood about the length. It was the 4 iron that's 39.25" long, but it's no big deal. I can do my usual lengthening and backweighting, they'll turn out fine and the only hard part will be waiting until Monday to play them.

I forgot to look for my bag. I might as well drag it out of the crawl space and start loading it up. IMG_3786.JPG

They are cleaned up, extended, backweighted and have new grips on them. It's going to be a long wait until I can play on Monday.

I used some midsize grips instead of my usual jumbos. These particular grips felt slightly larger for a midsize, so what the hell.. It did leave the swingweight at C7 instead of the usual C2 to C3 they come out to be with the jumbos. I don't really feel it all that much.

I got to play 9 this morning and was reasonably happy with the old irons. I hit mostly punch shots around to protect my wobbly left knee, but my distance judgement wasn't all that good. The feel was nice though and that was what mattered to me.

I caught one 6 iron on a 160 yard par 3 and got the momentary impression I was about to make my fifth hole-in-one, something I've waited for over 50 years. I left it 2' behind the pin and tapped out for my only birdie of the day.

I think I mentioned earlier looking at a set of JPX900 HM irons, senior flex and all that, 5-GW. I also bought those because the first set of them I had felt so good, but my subsequent 921 set didn't impress me as much. I have no idea why, unless it had to do with the shaft, because I'd be a very rare, contrasting voice to say the 921 HM didn't feel good.

They are now in the bag, waiting for an opportunity to play the next time. I'll take a few of the MX200 irons with me to compare if the course isn't too busy.

At this point, with my old 825 driver or ST200 driver and my ST190 fairway wood, I'm pretty well set... OH, I still have an MP series sand wedge and I've never seen anything that improves on that.

If the other set works, I will swap you my 2018 Srixon Z585 irons for the JPX 900 HM set.
Mine are in very good shape (as I wash them after every round)
5- pitching wedge with 70 gram steel fiber reg shafts. (5 iron never shafted or even used for that matter)
I live in north florida 32068

Thank u
Thanks for the offer, but I really need senior flex shafts at this point and I'm not sure I'll sell the HM irons by a long shot.

I can answer that (I hope) - There is no Sales Forum as such here, but there is no problem offering Mizuno related items for sale or asking people here if they have something Mizuno you are trying to find? - Provided you don't try to run a business doing so? - I have bought and sold items myself here over a number of years - Also worth bearing in mind is that most participants here are based in the UK rather than across the pond in the US - Hope this helps?

I have found a set of JPX 825 with graphite shafts. I hope they are in good as shape as they look. They have the fujikura fit on shafts that are stiff. I am familiar with this older shaft but won't be able to use them. If you have a set of A flex graphite shafts we can swap, I'll ship next week when they get here. The set consists of 6 thru gap wedge.

Peace

David

No problem! - I'd suggest you post a "Wanted" thread in the Equipment Forum asking if anyone has a set of the shafts you are after as you will stand a better chance of someone reading it there than reading your post in this thread? - Good luck ... Paul

The clubs are in very good shape !! Fujikura Fit-on stiff shafts. I took them over to a friends that has a laser frequency machine....
stiff to x stiff
Firm - x firm
ladies to regular
regular to stiff
regular to firm
firm to x stiff for the six clubs. They were all over the place to the tune of a 93 for me. However, I am still on my comeback run from cancer.

So, if any of you guys have a set of A flex graphite shafts, I would be interested... Especially if they are Orochi
