May 2011, a group of 20 golfers headed for the small Cumbian town of Brampton for the first Northern Forum Day. We had managed to get 5 tee times on a Saturday morning at a members club and were holding our first forum event. Needless to say the day was a great success, we went back to Brampton the following year, before changing the format. Discussions of an overnight jaunt with two rounds of golf had taken place Deemac, one of the forum leading lights in the early days, arranged several of these events. Over the years friendships have been made, we still meet up every year, but numbers have varied as some faces drop out and others take their place. For me this has been one of the highlights of this forum. Making golfing friends from across the country, who are able to enjoy their game, enjoy an evening or two in a nice hotel and then head home already looking forward to the next year.

This year may be different due to Covid19, but with 2 months before we are due to meet I have my fingers crossed.

What has been your highlight as a member of this forum ?

I concur David, signing up to my first one (Northern event) at Slaley Hall in Newcastle, thinking I must be mad, a one day, 600 mile round trip to play golf with nobody I knew.
So glad I did as I haven't looked back. Look forward every year to catching up with the friends I never would have made had it not been for the Mizuno Forum.

Ever indebted. Covid 19 may temporally stop us but will never dampen our spirit.

Hi David & Tony,

Couldn't agree with yous more..! my experience and highlights have been much the same as I've attended the past seven forum golf days my first one being at Slaley Hall in 2013 and each one has been excellent, I've enjoyed everyone of them and been very fortunate to have made a lot of good friends. As you say David this year may be different but like you I have my fingers crossed.

John. :)

I joined the forum in 2012 - My first experience of meeting someone was when I bought something from Stewart (57) - I think it was a set of iron heads (?) - Stewart lives in Norway, but was coming over to the UK to play in the Trilby Tour - I arranged to meet him to collect the heads, & we organised a round of golf at Essenden GC where we were hosted by another Forum member (TonyTim) - I had no idea what to expect as all we had done was chat on the forum & via PM - Stewart & Tony turned out to be a couple of great guys & we have been friends ever since & have played golf together on a couple of other occasions - Meeting them spurred me on to try playing in Forum Days & these are much as David (DCB) & others have described - Great fun, with (for some) serious golf to be played, or for others, serious drinking to be done! - I have played in more of my local Forum Days (Southern) as my back isn't really fit for long car journeys to the North of England (or beyond!) - I did make it to Formby Hall for my one & only appearance in the Northern Forum Day - It was great to meet up with the "regulars" like DCB, Seanmor & the aforementioned Deemac - Everyone was so friendly & the golf, although keenly contested, tends to take a back seat over the socialising - Long may it continue...
Last, but not least, I would like to mention MPX - David is one of the senior members of management for Mizuno Europe, but if you met him without knowing who he was, you would think he was just one of the regular members of the Forum? - No airs & graces, just a genuinely nice bloke - We are lucky to have him looking after our Forum - Long may that continue also...

Indeed, without the input from MPX this would be like many other forums out there. He has helped many of us with questions over product or delivery times and has certainly been very good for us. When I had my accident back in 2014, MPX made contact and I received a rain jacket as a gift, which was greatly appreciated during my rehab where lots of walking was involved.

Another thing that brings a smile to my face is the memory of tonytim8 with a smile as wide as the Firth of Forth after he shot an amazing 45 points during our round at Kilspindie Golf Club. Twas an amazing feat. Unfortunately the main event was 24hrs late and normal service had been resumed by then 😉

As with Tony and HSB, my first forum day was Slayley Hall, , and what a great time was had by all. time has flown by, friendships made, from all corners of the country, great banter, piss taking all in good fun, some good drinking sessions, both northern and southern forums, have been excellent, ,
all very much appreciated are the contributions from Mizuno and Dave, ( MPX ), was looking forward to this years but no travel allowed out the country as yet,
Take care and stay safe all of you great guys.

Ahhh, great memories. This is definitely a year of reflections. All great, even the rain sodden ones !!!!

And yes, much thanks goes to MPX as well for getting the 1000 dimpled ball rolling. :)

Great subject!
I guess I’ve had more personal highlights than most as a direct result of involvement in this forum.

Attending (and winning) the first forum event

First trip to bear wood Lakes for the official Mizuno open forum day, where I first met up up with Dave Gisbourne amongst others, getting to meet MPX and see the tour truck

Pretty much every forum day since, winning again a few years later, at least a full wardrobe and bag full of clubs as prizes over the years. Got to meet and play with dozens of great guys and girls over the years

A guided tour of the Cumbernauld factory with DeeMac. Truly fascinating.

Played in a North Wales Mizuno tour with Giz. Amazing few days that was.

Paired up with Jonesy at our local course as members

Fair to say, though, my overall highlight was my third trip to Bearwood Lakes, invited to attend a media day hosted by MPX where not only did I grab lunch with Marc Crossfield, and attend an amazing short game clinic with Luke Donald and Chris Wood, but actually got to play in the main event, teeing it up with the former World number one with crowds and cameras.

A huge thanks to everyone I’ve met and especially I’d like to single out DeeMac for all his organizing of the initial events, but most of all to MPX himself who pretty much made all of the above happen.

Edit: just realised, I’ve recently passed the 10 year mark here. I know I’ve been a bit quiet of late, but that may well change as I try and re engage with the game after the lockdown

We had a late summer mini-meet back in 2016 at our club, The Merchants of Edinburgh. It was a select band who attended and played a tough set course, being the day after our Gents Open. Although a small outing, our most travelled player was Hursty, who had travelled up from Cornwall at the end of a family holiday, dropped his family at home in Shropshire and then continued up to Edinburgh, arriving at our house about 10pm after driving for most of the day. Shows how keen some people are to play in a forum golf event. Another great day on the course with forum friends 😃

We had a similar mini-meet the year before in 2015 held at Mar Hall Hotel Golf & Spa resort Bishopton It was organised by Brian G, also in attendance on the day were Big Davie, MVW, Bobobananas, DeeMac, Dougdadealer and my self Seanmor, we were very fortunate to have fantastic weather and a great day was had by all.

Same for me. I travelled all the way from Switzerland with 2 overnight stays, and it was well worth it. I still have the apparel which we received from MPX.

My opening teeshot at the northern Forum Event in 2016, my first round of golf after my accident in 2014. I had great support from all on the Forum during my time in hospital and my rehab at home. It was really appreciated by our whole family. Mrs DCB came along to Formby Hall in 2016 to meet everyone and has played every year since.
