It's very likely the season is over for me. But I almost finished the season with style the other day making back-to-back birdies on the last two holes hitting the approach shots with 3 and 5 irons, both within 5 feet of the hole. With another birdie on the 10th, it could've been a pretty good day if not for the four blobs. :D

But as there was still some daylight left after the round, I decided to play a couple of more holes on the other course. The real trouble started on the fifth hole when it became very problematic to see the ball. Darkness combined with balls plugging in the wet fairways made life a wee bit difficult. I never found my tee shot on the 8th but then found two plugged balls on the 9th fairway quite close to mine. :) It's definitely an experience to play when you can't see anything. all you have is the feel and the sounds.

Was able to play 10 holes after work today before it got too dark. After starting out bad with dbl bogey, bogey bogey to go +4 after 3 holes, I played the following 7 holes in +1 with the only bogey coming on the hardest hole on the course. I am quite happy with that. I was trying some swing thoughts on generating more power - trying to create more with without lag on the back swing and really turning and squatting to start the downswing. I dind't hit it farther but very straight for my standards so that's a positive. Maybe it would have been a bit further was it a bit warmer but it's a good start to the season. 44 - 03032021.jpg

Well the weather here in the west cost of Scotland is finaly a little milder so I managed to get out this morning for my first 18 holes of golf in 2021..!
although we have been able to play golf in Scotland not having been locked down like the rest of the UK the weather has been the only restriction as its been absolutly crap..!!

Anyway got to play 18 holes with one of my mates as its restricted at the moment as only two balls allowed to be played but I've been told that that will be getting changed soon and we will be back to playing our usual four balls in the next two to three weeks..?

Much to my surprise I played way better than I thought I would especialy having not swung a club or hit a ball from December last year, I was actualy amazed how well my game had survived over that period of inaction, the one area of my game I'd say let me down was my pitching and putting but I think thats to be expected,

Final score was 44 out and back in 44 for a gross 88 and 32 points

Cheers

John

Good to see you've managed to get out John. Weather is finally looking like spring is in the offing 😁 Hope you are well, hopefully catch up at some stage this year.

Have you Scots no shame? - First you inflict "Fish Wars" on us (Sturgeon v Salmond) and now you regale us with jolly tales of "playing golf" - So you've had some bad weather, but I'd hazard a guess at least you could beat the carp out of some rocks at the local driving range?
Not upset at all down here in Sassanach Land!

Someone please remind me, how do you count points again?

When I lived in Jamaica, they played a lot of Stablefords where a par was 2 points, a bogey was 1 point, anything more was zero, but every once in a while they would vary things so that a double bogey or more would subtract 1-2 points.

A birdie was 3 points, and eagle was 4 and the one time someone made an albatross, they awarded him 5.

I think it might be easier to express my misery if I could do it the same way as the rest of you.

Hi Dennis ... Your first set of points is correct: No score = 0 Bogey = 1 Par = 2 up to Albatross 5 but (certainly in the UK) we do not subtract points at any stage (which would be too depressing!) - Those scores presume you are not receiving shots from your handicap & if you are it is the nett score you calculate your points from (so if you got a par with a shot it becomes a nett birdie & scores 3 points)
Hope that helps & if this was some sort of wind up or Miami humour ... You got me!

Thanks Paul - According to that system, I only had 20 points yesterday.

Playing without a fairway wood at Killian Greens is a big disadvantage, given my age and distances I hit the ball anymore. It really showed in my score yesterday. With nothing between a driver and a 5 iron, I couldn't reach a couple par 4 holes, much less get close in regulation on a couple par 5 holes.

Not that it would have been a spectacular difference, but it was probably worth 5-6 points.

Last night, I told my brother-in-law, who is an avid golfer at Gold Hills Country Club in Redding, California, that I had shot my age... but I decided to play the last 3 holes anyway. :)

Hi Dennis ... I'm sure you won't, but don't get too wrapped up in your score - You're out in the fresh air doing something you love & I, along with many others here, would swap places with you in a heartbeat (roll on 29th March - when golf restarts in England, Wales & Norn Iron)

You guys play in weather I'd see and get back in bed. Yes, I really am totally spoiled.

A quick story... I'm adopted and did a birth family search a few years ago. I discovered I have brothers and sisters, all out west. One brother-in-law is an avid golfer and he plays in freezing weather without the slightest thought. One day, I asked him what he wears to keep warm and he said, "Usually long pants and a sweater over my golf shirt."

If I wasn't bundled up to look like the Michelin Man, my personal molecular movement would stop dead in its tracks.

Give me some warning before you post something like that again. I had to rush off and find a sweater! But yeah, that's the kind of weather that makes me happy I live in Miami.

My wife and I talk about relocating someplace less expensive when she retires in a couple years. (I retired in 2009) There's a part of North Carolina that looks really good, much less expensive housing, lots of golf courses around, but there is definitely a winter. We'll see.

An other mild sunny day for our golf today but this time we were able to play as a four ball as restrictions have been further relaxed here in Scotland and it's also looking like we will very soon be able to use the club house facilities.

And again I managed to play reasonably well finishing with a gross 86 and 35 points,

John :)

It was a glorious day through here John, it must have been good to get out as a four ball for the first time in a while. Good scoring for you as well. Looks like it was a good day all round 😁

Hi David yes it was the same over here on the west coast a nice bright sunny day I even had to take off one of my top garments as I was getting hot..!
If I'm hounest instead of saying I played resonably well I should really have said I managed to scramble round really well because in reflection I played some crap shots..! so I was surprised I managed to score what I did, we also played a match play game within our four ball but we lost that 3-2 :(

New bats so far so good.
Results not posted yet so we’ll see after the weekend but happy with that

That's a great start BP - Sounds like you need to get an order in for a Running Bird Sombrero to go with your other Mizuno gear!
Not jealous at all that all our Celtic cousins are back playing (only 8 days to go!)
