Hi

Could I be fitted with wrong shafts?

I had a fitting a month or so ago. One of the things I said I was looking for was a higher ball flight as I hit it quite flat.

I also don’t have a very quick swing usually mid 60s

I’ve been given the project x LZ 6.0 stiff.

First thing my friend said to me when I told him I had a stiff shaft is oh you just have a fast swing?

At the weekend I went to get some new Mizuno wedges. Whilst in there trying the wedges (which I bought) I asked if I could try the Hot Metal Pro which he let me do. With a stiff shaft and I had a go with it. He said I should try regular shaft. Then he tried me with a regular shaft and there was a higher ball flight and carry was 10 yards further.

What would be the reason for a stiffer shaft?

Stiffer shaft should hold your flight straighter for you less deviation, without seeing you hitting a shot or having raw data cant say for definite.

Could your mention of swing speed in the 60s be a typo? I can't imagine any fitter worth his pay could suggest a stiff shaft for such slow swing speeds. Just to compare, my swing speed with a driver ranges around 80-85 mph and I use a senior flex shaft.

I always heard, since I was a little kid, (when dinosaurs roamed the Earth), use the most flexible shaft you can control.

If you are able to control the regular flex to your satisfaction, given the higher flight you want and increased distance, it sounds like the next question is, can you return the set you have and get the set you want with regular flex shafts, without much cost?

I'd be careful to test what that set may be, just to make sure the new shafts perform in the club like the Hot Metal Pro you hit.

Keep us posted. The search is always fun...

How did the fitter arrive at the LZ 6.0 recommendation and was it in fact a proper fitter or a box store/pro shop salesperson? Even if the latter, a quick look at the optimizer would start you out on the lighter side of the stock demo matrix, even more so if you're looking for a higher flight. Try Recoil ESX F2/3 @ around 60g and any of the 95g R options to find preferred weight and go from there. At that speed, a 120g butt sfiff poker would highly unlikely be the best fit. But without a swing vid and data nothing is definite.

The LZ 6.0 is a 120 gram weight shaft and although it is a very good shaft, it is not a good fit for anyone with your swing speed. I would put you in a 115-120 gram shaft for wedges. Even golfers with slower swing speeds need that weight for touch around the green. Total weight is the first thing I match to the player’s strength and swing speed. Going too light is worse than too heavy IMHO. Light gets you in trouble, while heavy just requires dropping down an iron. Given the information you have given, I would give the Nippon NEO or the TT Elevate 95 a go. Both are high launching and have enough weight to integrate well with the wedges. Good luck!
