Yet again I made a huge mess of our Club Championships on Saturday and missed the cut for Sunday. I do blame my preparation though. The last round I played was on Tuesday and on Friday evening I was invited to play a couple of holes after I had set the hole locations for the four rounds of CC.

We went to play yesterday and I started off with two birdies and ended up with a total of four birdies plus two tap-in pars (ball overhanging hole). Too bad I also made five double bogeys and a triple. My friends were giving me a fair bit of cr*p for my scores on Saturday (they didn't even participate) but with the four birds and the lowest score on the day, I happily put them in their places after the round. :)

The rangefinder has done wonders to my chipping game. It might look horrible to be lasering 12-20 meter shots but with the exact distance, I know exactly what I should do without second guesses, which might destroy the whole execution, never mind getting the estimation wrong.

I haven't been hitting the ball well recently, much less scoring well. All of a sudden yesterday, I played 9 holes and after I loosened up around the 2nd hole, I hit every fairway, most greens and looked vaguely like the player who used to inhabit my body. I hit 2 bladed chips that each cost me a couple more shots. I also 3 putted from the fringe once, so that was the only reason I didn't break 40 on the more difficult front nine at Killian Greens.

i was a pretty happy camper, for a change.

What shafts do you have in the Ping G700's Dennis?

They have the Alta CB graphite, regular flex, but 1.25" longer at the butt, so they approximate a softer regular.

They don't feel anywhere near as good as my JPX 900 Hot Metal irons, but I'm trying to convince myself the performance makes up for it. Something about their hollow technology and wider sole seems to work better for me right now, considering the inconsistent swing I'm making.

I'm also a happy camper. Shot 80 today for 37 points. 2 birdies, 2 double bogeys, 2 penalty shots. Got to break into the 70s soon.

We're going to play at the oldest club in the country on Saturday, a wee bit like going to St. Andrews, (but not even close).

Played my first round of golf on Monday after having been laid up for the past 7 weeks with a bout of trigger finger in my left hand it got so bad that I couldn't grip on to anything without my fingers locking up I eventually had to have a course of cortisone injections in to three of the tendon sheaths of the middle fingers of my left hand to alleviate the problem, so far it looks to have cured the problem but I wont be keeping my fingers crossed just in case...!,

Anyway I was happy to be back on the golf course and able to swing a club without the pain in my hand, it was also good to be able to catch up with my golfing buddy's once again although I don't think they were just as happy to see me back playing again as I was after I lifted the sweep money with an 85 for 38 points..!
I really was surprised that I won as I don't think that I played that well my driving, fairway woods and hybrid play were not at their the best but I did manage to pull off a few good short iron and wedge shots from some tricky positions and my putting was very solid so I managed to scramble a score,

And to cap it all I was celebrating my 72nd birthday so all in all i't turned out to be a very enjoyable day...!

Played 12 holes yesterday first game of the 2020 also the first time playing with my my new bag set up very happy how it went finished with a gross score
of 54 strokes for 12 holes that's 10 over par so very happy with that,

Worthy of a mention was my decision to replace the two CLK hybrids with the JPX FLi-Hi's 4.5 & 6 iron replacements they made a big difference to my game
as they were way much easier for me to play with confidence,

But the most impressive new club has to be my ST200X driver with the Mfusion regular flex shaft of the seven drives I hit with it I never once missed a fairway
and usually with the ball landing not to far of centre, I thought I might have struggled with the shaft only being 39 grm's in wight and that I would be to light and I would not be able to feel where the head of the driver was through the swing but I found that wasn't the case in fact it had the complete opposite effect I felt that I could control the club much more easily as the feed back was actually much better than anything I've felt from my previous drivers using much heaver shafts, an other advantage I've had with the driver is that I look to be hitting it much more consistently off the middle of the driver face now than I did with my previous drivers so that's an unexpected bonus..!

As for performance of the driver It's right up there with anything I've had so far the dispersion left to right looks to be way better and distance wise it's as good as Iv'e had I'm usually around the 200/205 yards but one drive I hit yesterday was 240 yards in total, but I'll wait and see if that's just a one off

Hi John ... Good to hear you got a few holes in (first outing this year, wow!) - Interesting you should mention the 39g shaft you have fitted in your driver - A pal of mine has the Diamana Green 40g A / Senior flex in his driver - We were at the range yesterday & he told me to try it (as a joke more than anything) - I was a bit sceptical that I would even hit the ball with this combo as I use Stiff flex & X in some brands - To my surprise I hit a couple of really good shots, one of which was nearly up with my best effort with my own driver! - Current shafts have come a long way - 40g A flex used to be like a fishing rod, but now they are very stable & it won't be long before we are all using lighter shafts with less flex imho ... Hi Paul,

Weather here as in most area's of Scotland has been really crap the rain and high winds have put a real dampener on playing any golf and so far my club has had
to close the course a total of 18/20 days from the start of the year due to extensive flooding but thankfully things are improving now..!

One of the players in our four ball yesterday was our golf club bar steward he doesn't normally play with us as being a young whipper snapper in his mid to late thirties and he wouldn't normally hang out with us old coffin dodgers but asked if he might join us to make up the four ball, he's a relatively good golfer playing off 6 handicap, we teed off at the first both hitting our drives down the middle of the fairway when we got to our respective balls he had hit his the furthest but only by about 5 yards further than mine, at the third hole which is a slightly uphill drive I hit an absolute cracker out driving him by about the same distance as he had out drove me at the first so honers even, as the game progressed he commented on the white head cover of my driver saying he thought it looked really smart and I said it was the new ST200X driver that I had just got that past week and that this was my first time using it also said it was fitted with a very light but regular flex shaft,

As we neared the end of our game I think his curiosity got the better of him and he asked If he could get a hit with the driver but said as he played a stiff flex shaft in his driver it probably wouldn't suit him, as he stood on the 12th tee he had a few practice swings just to familiarise him self to the feel of the driver commenting on how light the driver felt he then teed the ball up an proceeded to hit a shot through the air like an Exocet missile.
To say the least I think he was suitably impressed if not very surprised by how well he had hit it..!.

Passed by the Troon Municipal courses yesterday. The opening holes of all three coures looked very wet with standing water in many places. Over the road the Darley seemed to be a good bit drier, but, it's been a very very wet winter and this is going to take time to dry out and the courses time to recover. I think I'll wait for a while yet, definitely a fair weather golfer thee days 😉

Amazing to hear that even links courses are struggling with this very wet winter we are all experiencing here in the UK - My home course in the South of England has been closed quite a bit too, with "carry only" on plenty of days too - Apparently from 1st October - 31st December 30 inches of rain was recorded on the course! - It's actually rained more since start of January, so competitions are being cancelled on a regular basis - Is it ever going to stop raining :(

We need a good Spring, a bit of warmth and a bit of breeze and very little rain and we'll be fine 😉

Got in an other 12 holes of golf this morning with three of my mates played not to bad to finish with a gross score of
55 for 11 over par, again I’m very impressed with how the ST200x driver is performing it continues to be a fairway finder.
the course conditions were excellent as was the weather bit cold to start with but after a couple of holes things started to warm up, due to the on going situation things have changed some what and we were observing government guide lines of no personal contact And keeping a safe distance apart.
As for the course equipment that’s all been removed there are no bunker rakes ball or equipment cleaning facilities the pins are still in use but you don’t have to remove or touch them now as there are spacers fitted round the base of them that only Allows the ball to drop about an inch in to the cup, the starters office is still open but the clubhouse and it’s facilities are closed..!

My club is carrying out similar precautions with all bookings, cards etc being done through the pro shop.. At the end of last week we were asked to remove all belongings and clubs from the locker rooms. The latest email today:-
The bar and catering operations are closed.
Access to the clubhouse is permitted only for the use of the toilet and hand washing facilities. Members are not permitted to change shoes or continue to use their lockers during this time.
The golf course is open, rakes have been removed, hole cups have been modified and the toilets on the course are closed.
Access to the pro shop is allowed but only a maximum of 2 customers at a time to be in the shop.

Looking at the NE/NW PGA website, as of the 19th, they are continuing with their Pro and Pro/Am events for the time being.
https://www.nenwpga.co.uk/news/newsitem.asp?newsID=1253
Very surprised at this and have noticed that it is similar in other regions.

I really can't be bothered to play.

Glad to hear you got a few holes in John - I played 18 today - We started as a 4 ball (keeping 2m apart of course) but lost one at the turn when his dodgy shoulder flared up - Our course is exactly the same as yours (rakes, pins, facilities etc) - Isn't ironic that Covid-19 hits us now, when the wettest winter in living memory lets up? - Why couldn't it have hit a couple of months ago? - Play while you can as I think it won't be long before we are all kept indoors?
Paul
PS - There's a question in one of the forums about the ST200 driver & what shafts will fit? - Maybe you know the answer?

Hi Paul,

I'm so glad I got to play today as I've just received notice that our golf course is closed with immediate effect, not really surprised considering..!
anyway in the event of this happening I did order half a dozen white plastic practice golf balls a couple of days ago should be getting them soon so I'll be able to keep up my chipping practice in the back garden and I already have a practice putting matt in our spare room i'll be able to hone my putting skills at the same time..!

John.

Our Club had an email from England Golf last night.
"
Following on from the Prime Minister’s statement tonight (23 March), golf clubs and golf courses in England must now close.

It is England Golf’s position that this deeply regrettable, but highly necessary and responsible course of action must be implemented with immediate effect and be maintained until further notice.

The government has identified an urgent need to introduce new restrictions on public life and on non-essential businesses opening their doors.

This has been done to limit the spread of the coronavirus and relieve the growing pressure on our National Health Service.

Keeping golf courses open is simply no longer compatible with the updated policy of government which is designed to save lives in a time of national emergency.

The health and wellbeing of the nation is the only consideration that matters at this moment in our history.

These are incredibly testing times for the country. The golf industry cannot be shielded from the economic and social ramifications caused by this temporary shutdown of normal life.

We would like to assure the golfing community that England Golf staff will continue to work remotely with all affiliated golfers, clubs and counties to try and minimise the damage caused by this suspension of regular golf club life.

We will continue to signpost clubs and counties to the latest government advice and schemes designed to help the economy cope with the disruption caused by coronavirus."

Hi John ... Yes, it was inevitable really that golf, despite all the positives for exercise etc, would be stopped - I see you are well set for some shortgame practice at least - I can putt ok (indoors) but my back garden is still akin to a swamp, so it'll be a while before I can start chipping!
Keep safe & healthy
