Hi guys,

just wondering what format this takes at your club.  For mine it's a 36 hole scratch medal on one day followed by scratch matchplay knockout for the top 8.

Entries limited to the top 72, balloted on handicap (which I just missed this year!)  cut line was 9.8 :(

We have both, stroke play and match play championships for men and women. The match play has scratch and handicapped championships and are played over the summer.

The stroke play championships are two-day events and all of them are scratch. There's an open flight that plays 72 holes (36+36) while the other flights play 36 holes (18+18). The other flights include juniors, ladies and some senior flights for both the men and the ladies.

The Open flight will take in a maximum of 42 players and there's a cut to 24 after the first day. In the recent years we haven't had a full field so everyone who has wanted to play, has gotten in. We got a questionnaire this winter and one of the questions was should the open flight be changed to three days, make it 54 holes or something similar to attract a bigger crowd.

An LET pro won the open flight some years back and when we had a lady teaching pro, she also participated in the open flight but didn't fare quite as well.

We have a 36 hole scratch qualifier over a weekend and then  scratch matchplay knockout for the top 16. The Final is held the following Saturday along with all the other Finals, Ladies, Junior and various division  finals.

Qualification is via a standard one round monthly medal. Then the top 8 from A and top 8 from B get drawn in a match play knock out.

Quarter final on the Monday, semi on the Friday and final on Sunday.

Final is over 2 rounds with free lunch in between!

I won my first 36 holes medal in the one day.  This has changed a lot of the years in 18holes medal over successive Saturdays however in summer you have the possibility of people only making one round due to family holidays particularly if one of the rounds is postponed due to bad weather, have seen situations where a guy shoots great score first round then doesn't make the second round and a smash and grab occurs with less people able to win given absentees.

old Sokol 36 in single day in my eyes is best, although I'll leave you with the story of a 68 year old senior former county player shooting level par gross 1st round and not going out for the afternoon round as he was too tired to play which was quite sad given what would have been quite an amazing win if he had played in the afternoon!

My old club always had 36 holes scratch stroke play over the weekend with prizes for best net. The top eight qualified for match play rounds. I qualified three times and never made it past the quarters.

They also had a Club match play Championship open to every member and played over the whole season, but this has become much less popular after the match play handicap rule changes. A lot of the lower handicappers don't bother now with a full handicap difference
