Who are the Handicap Managers & who are the genuine players?

So, on a slow day I thought I would have a read back through the "How did you do" thread. What I realised is that there are quite a few of guys on here who are either telling porkies of their exploits or they are handicap managers, and then a load of others who are genuine players.

I play in roughly 45-50 Handicap Qualifying rounds of golf every year. This includes around 20-25 at my own club and the rest from Open competitions where you play 2 rounds in one day or just individual single round comps such as the Marriott Winter Series at the Forest of Arden.

So are you a:

  1. person who enters hardly any Q comps but boasts of low scores out of competition?
  2. person who always plays in Q's so knows their handicap is a true reflection of their ability?
  3. person who believes they are better than their handicap but don't perform on the big stage?
  4. person who like me, plays a lot of AWAY Q's so their handicap is probably higher than should be due to unfamiliar courses or play tougher courses regularly?
Time for the truth...... you all know what type of player you are......

I play about 20-30 medals a year, either optional, balloted or supplementary, my handicap always tends to rise a little then tumble when I hit a bit of form, before creeping up again.

last year I put a massive amount of time into winter practise and got cut quite a bit as season began, form dipped toward end tho and I've creeped up steadily from 7.4 to 8.5.

I fully expect to come down again once season kicks in as again my winter work looks to have improved my game, just need to bring it all together.
If you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything.

It's a lot easier to shoot a low score when there isn't the pressure of a card in your back pocket. Everyone does that on occasion. It's good for the confidence. The big test is playing competition golf regularly and playing to handicap on a regular basis. As long as your playing comps on a regular basis your handicap should be reasonably close to your playing ability.

For the past 2 years (Sep - Sep) Ive kept my own handicap spreadsheet which I have adjusted as per CONGU procedures for every round I've played (except foursomes, greensomes & texas scramble)

The first year I had 92 rounds, currently in this year I have 43 rounds so my handicap is pretty accurate on the spreadsheet.

If every card had been submitted then I would currently be off 6.0, however as i havent played in that many comps my official CONGU hcp is 8.1 (it started at 7.8 2 years ago) as each time i have played in a comp I've been rubbish!

Can i play lower than my average score? Without doubt.
Do I only report good rounds? definitely not, as a few posts ago will proove. ("Awful, that is all")

I think every golfer is guilty of bigging up their game at times, if you look at all the posts though then generally theres only a few people that regularily update the HDYD thread and usually its about good and bad rounds. The others/infrequent that post are usually about a good round so it may come across as them being better than their handicap suggests.

Seen that Hursty.... and the practice after said round!

I was just interested in what and how people might perceive their game.... and also how many Q's people play!

At our place from Easter weekend to last week in October all comp are qualifying. So my handicap is correct.

I guess I'm no different to a lot of golfers on here, I only get to play once a week at best so my score will raise and fall all the way through the season. If I could commit more time to the sport I'm sure I would be down to 3 but running your our company and the demand of having 4 kids and I'm feeling older by the round I have no chance now

#2 for me.  A mix of medals and stablefords throughout the year.  Our comps all through the year count towards handicaps. Whites in summer (maybe starting this coming weekend) and yellows normally from October 1st.
Some away scores entered too from open days but I don't often play away.

Although most of my golf is mainly "social", rollups, club matches etc I play in every competition I am eligible for - As a 5 day member that means a midweek medal every month and approx another 20 comps which are held during the week rather than at the weekend - My handicap (4.5) is almost as low as I have ever been (4.4) mainly due to playing a lot & practicing the rest of the time!

I play in every competition i can attend.I also play hcp league, scratch league etc and also friendly club matches .I play a lot of golf ,including a lot of practice rounds on my own before and after work (due to shifts).I am currently 9.0 hcp and my lowest was 7.1. I have played to scratch in a Medal and lots of times i have shot under my hcp by up to 4 shots.I have also played a lot of rubbish  and i mean plus 10 shots on hcp rubbish. When i play on my own i tend to use Game Golf and tag everytime. My hcp on there is something like 1.0.Says a lot about having a card in your hand!
