Rollup at New Forest (off 4hcp) - 4x temp greens on front 9 (due to heavy rain / flooding) & 3x temps on back 9 - Started with 7 pars & then went birdie on Par 3 8th where I hit 3w to 3 inches  & then eagled 9th to have 23pts on the front 9
Back 9 was i bit less impressive & I managed to drop shots on two of the holes with temporary greens, but birdied both the Par 5's - "Only" 21pts on back 9 so 44pts total - I tied for 1st place with that score with someone playing off 3hcp & he won on countback

My golf in 2018 started today at the New Forest - Surprised to find only 2 temporary greens after more rain overnight? - Maybe the strong wind was drying things out? - So, got off to an iffy start with dropped shots on 1st & 3rd but hit my 2nd shot stone dead on 5th & picked up a shot - Dropped another shot on 6th though - The fun began on Par 5 9th which was one of the temps - Hit a great drive & despite leaving my 2nd short, I putted in for eagle! - 10th is also a Par 5 though this one was on the proper green - Nonetheless I hit driver / hybrid to 8' and rolled the putt in for another eagle! - That was my 3rd 3 in a row & I followed it with 3 more threes, one of which was on a Par 4 - Playing 16th I was still 2 under the card but the heavens opened & we ran for cover of the clubhouse (no one fancied staying out with me so I could finish the round!)

Looks like it's just me playing so far this year (lucky me / retirement rocks!)
Back to New Forest today to play in the rollup - Cold with a stiff breeze - Only 3 temp greens but very wet underfoot - Played in a 3 ball with a 13hcp & 21hcp (I'm 4hcp) - 21hcp had a 'mare on front 9 & only scored 13pts - I was very happy with 21pts, as I managed to leave my driver at home (getting old isn't all it's cracked up to be!) & was using a borrowed one - The 13hcp man had 22pts - By the time we reached the 18th we were level on points but critically he had a shot - We both had decent birdie chances but both made par & he beat me by 1pt - Incidentally, the 21hcp made an amazing recovery & managed to double his 13pts from the front 9 with a fantastic 26pts on the back!

Finally got to play 12 holes at my home club after a 2 month lay off due to my recent health
problems, I was a bit apprehensive about playing for the first
time but I got round without any problems thankfully the medication
seams to be doing its job.

The course was playing very short as it's all set up with temporary tee's and greens having
said that overall condition is very good considering the recent
weather all credit to our hard working green staff,

I was more than delighted with how I played considering I've not played for a while I
also got the chance to use my Shot scope V2 GPS & performance
tracking watch for the first time and was impressed with how easy it
was to set up and use,

Some info that I found interesting was my average distance with my driver off the tee was
195 yards but when I used my 3 wood it was averaging 211 yards, and
my longest drive was 198 yards and with the 3 wood it was 215 yards,

So maybe I should be looking at using my 3 wood off the tee more often,

it will be interesting to see how this pans out once I've played more games and
gathered more info and see if the trend continues,

John,

this is isn’t something out of the ordinary, most amateur golfers, especially higher handicappers will hit a 3wd further than a driver. That is because loft is your friend.... it’s easier to make a better contact with the ball and a slight off centre hit is punished less. Unless you have significant swing speed, a driver is also harder to keep in the air compared to a 3wd.

I always encourage higher handicap players who I get drawn with at my club to hit more fairway woods off the tee. They then hit more fairways and mostly hit it longer than their driver!

Keep playing well!
