All the big boys are out to play this week in the US. Some groups to look out for.

Luke is paired with Rory and Keegan Bradley the first 2 days.
Tiger, Haas, Freddie Couples.
Mahan, Rose, Stricker.
Fowler, Mickleson and the returning Bubba.
Snedecker, Scott and the returning Dustin Johnson.
Byrd, Watney, Stallings.

Seems the only guy missing is Lee Westwood (and Chucky 3 sticks)

Certainly an interesting round for Rory - started at the 10th and went par, par QUAD!!! A seven on a par three.... 3 birdies, another bogey and an eagle at the 5th have him back at level.

Luke also level, playing with Rory, 2 birdies and a double, a little less dramatic.

Noone has gone mental scoring wise (leader Romero at -4) so both very much in this.

Tiger at -1.

Most other big names yet to tee off.

Luke and Rory finished at -1 (just 2 off the lead)

Tiger at -2...

"Stricks", "Sneds", Justin, Hunter, DJ, Adam, "Fowls", Bubba and Big Phil all making their way to their first tee...

Mickleson withdraws citing "mental exhaustion"

http://www.pgatour.com/video/praxis/?y=2012&t=r023&p=01810

Not great form IMO. I'm guessing he has some issues off the course but a bit disrespectful to the PGA, to Jack, to the sponsors. Could he not have just hung out for one more round? He shot 79 btw so wouldn't have had to plan for the weekend.
I like Phil and enjoy his gung ho golf game, but if other golfers did this without any injury issues, they'd get royally slated.

Still, plenty of other big names in contention this week. The entire roster of Mizuno representatives are comfortably inside the top 20 :)

So what's the difference between a physical injury and a mental one then Pete???

Well it's not like he suddenly went nuts and started talking Bulgarian and walking in circles. He could've played today. He seemed lucid enough in the interview. Feeling a bit stressed or run down isn't enough for a WD IMO. Not sure this would've happened if he shot a 69.

Or there's something he isn't telling us....

Nice to see Callaway's "most accurate irons ever" advertised in the break by Tommy Gainey (he finished 12 over par)

The entire Mizuno player roster representatives now safely in the top ten.

Must admit, watching this coverage has done my confidence the world of good... Don't feel quite so bad about duffing my chip on 14 at Bearwood now, having seen some really poor shots from the guys who can really play this game!

The role that people taking photographs with mobiles on Phil's withdrawal is getting a good airing in some of the US press.

Conclusion seems to be that problem caused by poor marshalling. Hope R & A apply that lesson robustly at The Open.

Dissappointed with Phil's withdrawal. Lacking a little professionalism IMO. However Phil would be one of the last players that I would expect to do this.

Last round is going to be interesting. Rory looks favourite, though Tiger is in with a shout.

During coverage of the 3rd round yesterday, Mr Nicklaus was in the commentary box and was asked about Phil's withdrawal by Faldo. he wouldn't comment on it, but lets just say it came across that he was not at all happy about it.
