My old T4 wedges are getting pretty scruffy so I'm thinking of picking up some of the new S18 wedges.

Question is how you work out the right bounce? I play on a home course that is normally fairly damp, and think I want to end up with 50, 54, 58, but short of getting hold of the bounce variants and taking them for a long session on a grass short game area, is there a good way to work it out?

If we look at the 58 degree, the choices are:
58-04
58-08
58-12
58-16

so there is a good scope to get it wrong!

Thoughts?

What types of shot do you like playing with the 58?

I like to play flop shots so open up the face quite a bit, a high bounce 58 wouldnt be that great for me as the leading edge then raises slightly when opened up which makes me think I'm going to thin it!

On the opposite side though, im rubbish in bunkers and take too much sand, low bounce wedges in sand mean it digs in even more thus making the situation worse.

my T5 50/54/58 set up has 07/12/08 bounce respectively, I was brought up on links golf so tend to pick the ball of the fairway more often than not.

I'm also a picker.  My last fitting ended up with 50/08, 54/10 and 60/08.

Play in South Wales which isn't known for its dry climate.

I did a fitting with both Cleveland and Titleist.  Was recommended low bounces at both.

Good luck in your search.

I use Cleveland Pro Forged 588 RTX 2.0s. I play a hole variety of golf through the year and quite a bit on sandy subsoil courses, but because I want a multi-use wedge, all of mine are 10° of bounce and 50,54,58 degrees of loft.

just to add, I was always told that 2° of bounce is negligible either way as you need to be at least a Cat1 golfer due to the swing consistency needed to notice the change.

Interested to know why Links golf makes you a ‘picker’. Links golf requires crisp contact which means a moderate divot....

Majority of links golf that I played had rock hard, bare fairways, you try and create anything more than a shallow divot on those and your damage your wrists.

Its one of the reasons why i get hardly any spin, it doesnt bother me as im a geek and know what my carry and run out distances are so can work woth it.

Seems like ending up around 10 - 12 degrees makes sense, esp given my level of golf consistency really isn't very good.

Looking at the options it's only the 58 that can select bounce, so would likely go for 12 to match the 54, at least then I have a consistency in bounce amounts so should expect a similar ground interaction.

For the vast majority of golfers, the more bounce the better. Unless you’re playing shots on hard pan surface like Phil Mickelson, go for the biggest bounce you can get. Especially in the 58 which you’re likely to use in the sand.

There was an article on another forum (?) today about this - Quite a good generalised guide too:

If your attack angle is steep, you need more bounce.
If your attack angle is shallow, you need less bounce.
If the course has tight lies, use less bounce.
If the golf course has heavier lies, more bounce.
If the sand is fluffy, more bounce.
If the sand is firmly packed, less bounce.

Hope that helps?

You could buy two wedges in each loft, one with low bounce & one with high bounce - Then you have all bases covered - On the down-side you need to win the lottery first

My low bounce wedges work well on links but act like spades on soggy turf.

Not sure if you found some new wedges or not.... this info might help you.

I play the following:
52 has low bounce (8) and I use it for tight lies, fairway shots, and tight, compacted sand.

58 has high bounce (12) and I use that for tall grass, deep rough, and fluffy sand.

With different wedges having different bounce you can switch it up as needed all over the course.
