New Year, new season.

Wood playing in Dubai, with a chance to go up in the rankings, Donald doesn't seem to be in Dubai or Arizona, and can only go down.

What's happening? Does he still have exemptions for the majors?

Chris Wood is doing the right thing, if he gets into the top 50 then it's a money spinner with all the WGC events etc.

Luke Donald has played twice this year on the PGA tour, but it's early year, he'll probably miss the Masters but he needs to get his finger out and make a concerted effort to get back up the rankings. He's got the ability, and the new mind coach seems to be helping.

He doesn't play enough competition golf and his other interests keep him to busy. The course which is first involvement in course design is due to fully open in April, so if he is really interested in the design and construction of courses I expect it to keep him busy for a while and distract him from playing.

Bananasmans, he's only gone and named his course after you! But you have to go to Vietnam to play it.

Luke Donald is playing this week's Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

This looks promissing, albeit a while ago:

Spyglass Hill record: 62, Phil Mickelson (1st round, 2005), Luke Donald (1st round, 2006).

Four sub-par rounds in Dubai pushes Woody up to 40. Highest ever.

Donald doesn't play, so is down to 87.

Once you break the top 50 like Woody.....it gets easier to make all these big events and accumulate more points.  Opposite also true, so Luke will need to play more often this year.  Maybe a good thing for both players.

Is there any expectation Woody might play more in the United States?
Apparently he is waiting for Buzz Lightyear to turn Pro

Three dropped shots in the last two holes at Pebble Beach spoiled what was shaping up to be a pretty respectable four days of golf for Luke. Up to T10 at one point, ended at T26 but with some big names behind him. Positive signs maybe?

There's some logic to these rankings. Play and you go up (or down). Don't play and it's only one way (down).

So, Donald played (and stayed at 87), while Woody didnt play and went from 40 to 42.

A couple of early bogeys for Luke in the Northern Trust Open and then steady play to end -3 and T13. Good performance on an afternoon when a lot of players seemed to struggle with the course. Remarkably, Jordan Spieth carded a +8!

A shot per round better and he'd be a lot higher in the results in the events he's  played in this year. Still not quite firing on all cylinders.

Better finish for Luke, a shot per round would have made a big difference though.

I will be in Florida for a vacation as of Friday. Have Saturday/Sunday tickets for the Bay Hill Invitational. Hope to see a lot of Mizuno equipment in play and in the Spotlight (Luke Donald, Chris Wood in the field, and Arnie's grandson had recently Mizzie Irons in his bag).

Donald & Woody in Florida for the Arnold Palmer Invitation thingy.

Donald missed cut. Woody finished 7 under for +/- 20th place. World Ranking reduction to follow.

Woody managed to go down 3 spots after coming joint 20th.

Hopefully getting his confidence in that elevated environment.

So, Woody played all four days of the Masters; had a poor last round, but still managed to finish tied for 42nd.

You would assume that most of the world's top golfers played in the Masters, and that by finishing joint 42nd, Woody's ranking would have risen. But no. He is now down to 51 from 46 last week.

Confused? So am I.

Well, one way to get up the rankings is to play. And play well. Donald a solid 2nd at Hilton Head, although the field was not too strong. Up to 68 from 95.
