Did a custom fit yesterday. Choose the 18 SC iron head. The Mizuno fitting system came up with KBS Tour 90 stiff. Smash factor 1.4 on a 6 iron, totally killed it. We did not try any other shafts. Now I wish we had.

I have mid release, very smooth tempo, my eight iron is about 150 yards, summer conditions. Can reach most par fives in two shots if I hit the ball well.

Can this very light shaft really be right for me?????

I'm a bit surprised you didn't try any other shafts, but it is easy to get over excited when you hit the recommended shaft so well - My question would be what shaft have you been using? - If something like a DG S300 which weighs around 130g then going to a 90g shaft might not be the best idea? - As an 8 hcp you are most likely a good ball striker & can probably hit any shaft of the correct flex? - I would make sure the light shaft is right for your game before changing to it - For example, if you play in the wind / on a links course, a light shaft might not be the best idea - Something that gives you more control over the trajectory might be a wiser choice even if it doesn't go as far? - There are plenty of shafts to choose from between the S300 & the 90 KBS - I have been using the KBS C Taper Lite which is a 110g shaft in Stiff & this was easy to control trajectory wise (I have just changed to PX 6.0 which are slightly heavier @ 120g)
Finally, I think another fitting would be the sensible course of action

Thanks Paul

hmmmm I am using at s300 equivalent... Wishon S2S steeples steel stiff 112 g weight...... so would be a drop to 102g weight for the KBS Tour 90...

Handicap now 5.6 , but I am 56 years old so maybe a light shaft at my age is a good idea. I am a deliberate and smooth swinger so it could be the right shaft for me then again...

It was the fitter who stopped after one shaft because I hit the top recommended shaft so well....I would have tried others...

How good is the Mizuno software ? Does the top recommendation nearly always work?

wow look at this from the master club maker Tom Wishon. Look how light he recommends shafts should be as a starting point...Maybe this KBS tour 90 will be okay for me

As you say the drop from 112g to 102g isn't a big one - What I'm saying is you need to be sure that the KBS Tour 90 is right for you? - When I tried the KBS Tour Stiff shaft, it was the best feeling shaft I had ever used, but I hit it too high with too much spin - To keep the KBS feel I moved to the C Taper shaft in stiff & whilst it wasn't quite as nice feel wise, there was no problem with the trajectory & spin
As it happens I am also in my "senior" years (60) & play off 5hcp - But I have a short fast swing with a lot of hand speed - I can hit a lighter shaft miles further than a standard one, but lose control - In my case I would prefer to give up the chase for extra yardage in preference for a more consitent strike & better dispersion
Good luck ... Paul

Ouch... I hit three shots two where 164 yards both smash factor 1.4 (very high smash factor for a six iron) and one a mishit was 161 yards. Did not pay attention to height and spin numbers. In door facility. How do those figures sound? felt like I could control the shaft from mid way in my downswing.

But your right I think the fitter rushed the session. Now it is quite far away for me to go back and Im only in the country for a short while. thanks for your reply.

Well the irons arrived and so far they are great. That Mizuno software picked a very good shaft for me. Never would I have picked the shaft by looking at the specs. The ball flys well does not ballon up in the air. Even on a slight miss hit I get a good result. I had spent quite some time with a trackman at another fitting centre and never found as good a shaft. So +1 for the Mizuno software. The fitter says he knew from the numbers and flight it was a good shaft for me. So all is well then ends well. My old irons are history never to return. Thanks for the help.

I am glad this iron shaft worked out for you. I also have been fitted to this and was sceptical at first. I am close to placing the order soon. Need my ego to get out of the way to think i need to play a heavier shaft. I liked the 105 modus also but the higher balance point in the KBS helps with my timing. Are you still liking the iron set up?

Well as a 6 hcp I can't imagine you being a poor ball striker? - As per my comments above, a fitting can give you the optimum shaft based on the number of balls you hit during the process - I think that can be misleading, as I have had great results with lighter / more flexible shafts on a fitting, but once I put the clubs into play I just don't get the consistency I get with a heavier / stiffer setup? - Until I can't really hit the S300 (or similar) shaft that I get good results from at present, I will stick with them

For me the timing can come from getting the swingweight correct also. This shaft is popular amongst LPGA girls that are swinging at similar speeds. I have tried everything on the market and like to tinker but for longevity and easier on the body I could see these going in the bag. I like the AMT S300 also. I left Massa last year and back at Hilton TP.
